Fedora Linux is a community-driven Linux distribution developed and sponsored by Red Hat. It is known for being cutting-edge (new software, frequent updates) while still being stable. Fedora releases a new version about every 6 months, and each release is supported for ~13 months (until one month after the second next release).

Fedora Releases

  • Fedora Core (1 → 6) – 2003 to 2007 (early name, derived from Red Hat Linux).
  • Fedora 7 (2007) – First release under just “Fedora” (dropped “Core”).
  • Fedora 8 – 20 (2007–2013) – Continued regular 6-month cycle, introduced new features like systemd, GNOME Shell, etc.
  • Fedora 21 (2014) – Split into Workstation, Server, and Cloud editions.
  • Fedora 22 – 29 (2015–2018) – Many desktop and system updates.
  • Fedora 30 (2019) – GNOME 3.32, modularity improvements.
  • Fedora 33 (2020) – Switched default filesystem from ext4 to Btrfs.
  • Fedora 34 (2021) – GNOME 40 by default.
  • Fedora 37 (2022) – Official support for Raspberry Pi 4.
  • Fedora 38 (2023) – GNOME 44, KDE Plasma 6 preview.
  • Fedora 39 (2023) – Latest stable at the time.
  • Fedora 40 (2024) – Introduced KDE Plasma 6 by default.
  • Fedora 41 (Expected Oct 2024) – Under development.
